SPOTTING AND BLEEDING DURING PREGNANCY: WHEN TO WORRY.

Any type of bleeding is terrifying during pregnancy, even for the most level-headed mom-to-be.

There are a number of possible causes of innocuous spotting or bleeding in the first half of pregnancy, including:

-Implantation bleeding, which occurs about 4 weeks into your pregnancy as the fertilized egg attaches to your uterine wall.

-Hormonal changes              -Sexual intercourse

-Infections                            -Internal exam done by your obstetrician or midwife

-Ectopic pregnancy              -Displacement of the placenta.

Bleeding in pregnancy could lead to the following;

                     Still birth                                                              Miscarriage

-Anaemia in pregnancy.

-Infection

About 20% of women have some bleeding during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Although 1st trimester vaginal bleeding is an alarming symptoms.Few studies have rigorously investigated the prevalence,timing and predictors of bleeding,Estimates of bleeding prevalence in early pregnancy are imprecise and ranges from 7-24%.

Bottom line: No matter when and how it occurs, any bleeding during pregnancy warrants a call to a doctor even if only to confirm nothing is amiss.
