DIARRHEA IN CHILDREN

EPIDEMIOLOGY

Diarrhea is  the 2nd leading cause of all death worldwide.

Its the most common cause of morbidity and mortality in children worldwide.

The normal frequency and consistency of bowel movement varies with a child's age and diet.Thus,can affect all age group.

DEFINITION

Diarrhea can be defined as increase in stool frequency to twice the usual number per day in infants,or 3 or more loose stool per day in older children.

HOST FACTORS

Factors that increases susceptibility to diarrhea include,

-Lack of breastfeeding

-Malnutrition

-Measles

-Immunosuppression

-Drinking contaminated water.

-Not washing soiled hands.

-Not disposing of faces.

SYMPTOMS O DIARRHEA

Typical symptoms include;

-passage of loose stool

-severe abdominal cramps

-malaise

CONSEQUENCES OF DIARRHEA

They include;

-Dehydration

-Malnutrition.

-Renal failure

-Convulsion

-Brain damage.

HOW CAN WE PREVENT DIARRHEA DISEASES

PRIMARY PREVENTION(To reduce disease transmission)

-Rotavirus and measles vaccine

-Hand washing with soap

-Providing adequate and safe drinking water.

-Environmental sanitation.

SECONDARY PREVENTION(To  reduce disease severity)

-Promote breastfeeding

-Vitamin A supplementation

-Treatment with zinc.

TREATMENT PLAN TO TREAT DIARRHEA AT HOME

3 RULES

-Give the child more fluid to prevent dehydration.

-Give child plenty of food to prevent malnutrition

​​​​​​​-if the child does not get better in 3days or developing the following,fever,eating or drinking poorly,bloody stool,repeated vomiting please contact a doctor.
