SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES

Sexually transmitted infections are infections that are most commonly passed through sexual contacts.

STD's are dangerous because they can easily spread and it is hard to tell just by looking who has an STD.

 

MODE OF TRANSMISSION.

-Oral

-Vaginal

-Anal

-Skin to skin

 

NEED TO KNOW

The most common bacterial STI is Chlamydia.

Gonorrhea is the 2nd most common.

Genital herpes is the 3rd.

 Women infected with STDs have increased chance of contracting HIV.

 

Studies shows that STD and HIV co-infection increases HIV virus shedding in the patients genital secretions.

In 2008,it was estimated that millions of people were infected with either syhillis,gonorrhea,Chlamydia or trichomoniasis.

At least an additional 53 million people have genital herpes and 29 million women have human papillomavirus.

 

Too many people are engaged in unsafe sex,thus put themselves at risk of of STIs and the serious consequences .

The consequences of STIs are as shown below.


 

PREVENTION

The most effective way to prevent sexual transmission of STI is to avoid contact of body parts or fluids which can lead to transfer with an infected partner

 

VACCINES  

Vaccines are available that protects against some viral STIs such as hepatitis A,B and Human papilloma virus.

Vaccination before initiation of sexual contact is advised to assure maximal protection.

 

 CONDOMS

Condoms and female condoms only provide protection when used properly as a barrier.

 

 CIRCUMCISION In males may be effective to prevent some infections.
