WATER SUPPLY AND HEALTH

Over 5 million people,mostly children,die annually due to preventable waterborne diseases.Over 2 million die from water related diarrhea.Why?

It has been estimated that about 80% of all the diseases  in developing countries are related to unsafe water supply.

The effects of inadequate water supply are more visible and prevalent in sub-saharan Africa.

Its a common place to say that water is essential to health.Water is one of the world's most valuable resources,

Three main causes of water contamination and scarcity include:

-Water Pricing

-Water Mining

-Water Abuse

 

WATER RELATED DISEASES

They include:

-WATER -BORNE DISEASES-Caused by ingestion of contaminated water e.g cholera,typhoid infections.

-WATER-BASED DISEASE-Caused by parasite found in organisms that lives in contaminated water.e.gSchistosomiasis.

-WATER-WASHED DISEASE-Caused by poor personal hygiene e.g Scabies,trachoma,Lice.

-WATER RELATED DISEASE-Caused by insect vector like mosquitoes that breed or feed near contaminated water

                      

 CONTROL AND PREVENTION

 

  • Drink only filtered/boiled water.
  • Store water in a clean container,
  • Water jars/containers should be washed daily.
  • Always wash hands before and after preparing food or eating, likewise, children should be taught on hand washing.
  • Make sure that the pipes and tanks that supply water to your house are properly maintained and clean.
  • Using detergent and hot water, discard or flush any stool in the toilet.
  • Travelers should only drink bottled water and avoid uncooked food.
  • People suffering from water-borne diseases should not go to work until fully recovered to avoid spreading.
